Masseter neuromodulators (Botox / Dysport): how long do they last?

Masseter treatment with neuromodulators (Botox / Dysport) has two main purposes: relieving clenching and teeth grinding (bruxism), and slimming the angle of the jaw. The question we hear most: how long does it last? Here's the full answer, from the first week to long-term maintenance.

What are the masseters?

They're the powerful muscles at the angle of the jaw that you use to chew. When you clench or grind, often at night without realizing it, they work hard and can grow, giving the lower face a squarer look. Relaxing them reduces the force of clenching and, over time, the size of the muscle.

How long does the effect last?

In general, the effect on the masseters lasts longer than in facial areas:

  • On clenching and grinding: usually 3 to 6 months.
  • On jaw shape: slimming can last 4 to 6 months, sometimes longer.
  • With repeated treatments: the muscle, used less, loses volume. Many people can then space out their sessions.

These durations are guides. They vary with muscle strength, dose, metabolism and habits. No result can be guaranteed.

When do you see results?

  • Weeks 1 to 2: clenching decreases. Chewing hard foods may feel a little more tiring at first; it's temporary.
  • Weeks 4 to 8: the muscle starts to shrink. The jaw looks slimmer and softer.
  • Months 2 to 3: slimming is usually at its peak.

For bruxism and jaw tension

Clenching can cause morning headaches, a tight jaw and tooth wear. By reducing the muscle's force, treatment can relieve these symptoms. It doesn't replace your dentist's advice: a night guard is often still recommended, and the two approaches work well together.

For jaw slimming

When the width of the lower face comes from a developed masseter, treatment can give a softer, more oval contour. If the jaw lacks definition instead, it's not the right tool: we'd talk about jawline filler or fat-dissolving injections for localized fat. Telling the difference is exactly what the assessment is for.

How often should it be repeated?

  • The first year: often every 4 to 6 months, to train the muscle.
  • After that: many people can space out to 6 months or more, depending on symptoms and the aesthetic result.
  • If you stop: the muscle gradually regains its strength and size. There's no "rebound" beyond where you started.

What affects how long it lasts

1. Muscle strength: very intense clenching wears the effect off faster.
2. Dose: a dose matched to the muscle's size lasts longer.
3. Regularity: regular sessions in the first year help extend the effect.
4. Habits: stress, chewing gum, very hard foods.
5. Metabolism: it varies from person to person.

Safety and possible effects

Treatment is done by a trained nurse after a medical assessment. The most common effects are mild: tenderness at the injection point, a small bruise, chewing fatigue in the first weeks. It isn't recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, or with certain neuromuscular conditions. A well-placed dose preserves your smile.

How long do results last?

Usually 3 to 6 months, often longer with repeated treatments.

Does it hurt?

You feel a small pinch and some pressure. The session is short.

Because the muscle, used less, gets smaller over time.
