Hollow under-eyes: filler or PRF? How to choose

Do you look tired even after a good night's sleep? Dark circles are one of the most common concerns at our clinics. Two treatments come up often: filler and PRF. They don't do the same thing, and the right choice depends mostly on what's causing your dark circles.

First, what kind of dark circles do you have?

  • Hollow circles: a hollow under the eye that casts a shadow, often hereditary or linked to volume loss.
  • Pigmented circles: a brown tint, common on medium and darker skin tones.
  • Vascular circles: a bluish or purplish tint, from very thin skin that shows the vessels underneath.
  • Puffiness: swelling, often from fat or water retention.

Most people have a mix of two types. That's why an in-person assessment is essential.

The under-eye area: hollows, fine lines and thin skin are treated differently.

Filler: for the hollow

A hyaluronic acid under-eye filler, placed in very small amounts, fills the hollow that creates the shadow. The result is immediate.

Who is it for? Hollow circles, with thick enough skin and little or no puffiness.

Who isn't it for? Significant puffiness, very thin skin or a tendency to swell: hyaluronic acid attracts water and can swell or leave a bluish tint. In those cases, we'll tell you honestly.

PRF: for skin quality

PRF is prepared from a small sample of your own blood.

PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) is prepared from a small sample of your own blood. Injected under the eyes, it stimulates regeneration: the skin becomes thicker, firmer and brighter, which softens dark tints and fine lines.

Who is it for? Thin skin, vascular or mildly pigmented circles, fine lines under the eyes, and people who prefer a treatment based on their own cells.

Good to know: results are gradual. We usually recommend a series of sessions 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Quick comparison

  • Result: immediate with filler; gradual over a few months with PRF.
  • What's treated: volume (the hollow) with filler; skin quality with PRF.
  • Duration: usually 9 to 18 months for filler; results that build and are maintained with PRF.
  • Price: $600 for under-eye filler; $600 per PRF session.

Often, the best approach combines both: a little filler for the hollow, and PRF for the skin.

PRF injection: a regenerative treatment made from your own cells.

What about your routine?

Good sleep, an eye cream, daily sunscreen (pigmented circles darken in the sun) and managing allergies all help too. No treatment replaces these basics.

The consultation

The consultation with a nurse is free. For filler, a $100 consultation with a physician is required for first-time injectable patients; it's valid for 2 years. Our Black Friday offers are coming soon at all our locations: keep an eye on our promotions.

FAQ

Is under-eye filler risky?

It's the most delicate area of the face. That's why we reserve it for the right candidates, with a conservative technique and small amounts.

Does PRF hurt?

We apply a numbing cream. You mostly feel pressure and mild discomfort.

Where is it offered?

At our clinics in Montreal, Boisbriand, Trois-Rivières and Beauharnois.
